Street-legal rules

Cape May — what you can and can't do on a cart

Golf carts permitted on streets ≤ 25 mph.

The rules

  1. Public-road use is permitted on streets posted at or below 25 mph.
  2. Only Low-Speed Vehicles (LSVs) with a plate, seat belts and DOT lighting may operate on public streets.
  3. Driver must be at least 17 years old and hold a valid state driver's license.
  4. New Jersey allows registered Low-Speed Vehicles with a valid driver's license only on roads posted 25 mph or less. Cape May allows LSVs on its streets (mostly 20 mph, narrow streets 15 mph) and enforces the same rules as for motor vehicles, including seatbelts and child restraints.
  5. Every passenger must be in a designated seat with a functioning seat belt where required. No riding on laps, bumpers, or cargo beds.
  6. No riding under the influence. The same DUI rules that apply to cars apply to golf carts.
  7. Yield to pedestrians and bicycles. Use headlights and taillights whenever visibility is reduced.
