E-bike vs. cart

E-bike vs. golf cart vs. scooter

How to choose between e-bikes, mopeds, scooters and golf carts on the Carolina coast — range, storage, licensing and price.

Do I need a license for an e-bike or scooter?

E-bikes: no license required in NC or SC. Mopeds (under 50cc): NC requires a registered plate but no motorcycle endorsement. Scooters over 50cc require a motorcycle endorsement in both states.

Which has the best range?

Golf carts get 30–45 miles per charge. Class 1–3 e-bikes get 40–60 miles per charge. 50cc mopeds cover 80–100 miles on a tank of gas.

Which is cheapest to rent?

E-bikes typically run $35–$65/day, mopeds $55–$95/day, and golf carts $49–$159/day depending on size and town.

Which is best for beach access?

E-bikes — they can use bike paths and reach beach accesses that carts and mopeds can't. Fat-tire e-bikes can even ride hard-packed sand at low tide (check your host).
