Clearwater Beach rules & regulations

Every renter must review these before booking. You'll be asked to acknowledge them at checkout.

Street-legal rules

Clearwater Beach — what you can and can't do on a cart

Golf carts permitted on streets ≤ 35 mph.

The rules

  1. Public-road use is permitted on streets posted at or below 35 mph.
  2. Only Low-Speed Vehicles (LSVs) with a plate, seat belts and DOT lighting may operate on public streets.
  3. Driver must be at least 16 years old and hold a valid state driver's license.
  4. Florida law limits Low-Speed Vehicles to roads posted 35 mph or less with a licensed driver. Clearwater Beach's rules for rental LSVs also restrict them to 35 mph roads, which excludes Memorial Causeway (45 mph); rental operators must register with the city.
  5. Every passenger must be in a designated seat with a functioning seat belt where required. No riding on laps, bumpers, or cargo beds.
  6. No riding under the influence. The same DUI rules that apply to cars apply to golf carts.
  7. Yield to pedestrians and bicycles. Use headlights and taillights whenever visibility is reduced.

Local tips

  • The Memorial Causeway is not cart-legal — stay on the island.
  • Ride defensively around the roundabout; it's the busiest spot on the beach.

Summaries of publicly posted municipal ordinances. Guidance only — you are responsible for following current local law. Verify with the town office before riding on public roads.
