The rules

1. Public-road use is permitted on streets posted at or below 35 mph.
2. Only Low-Speed Vehicles (LSVs) with a plate, seat belts and DOT lighting may operate on public streets.
3. Driver must be at least 16 years old and hold a valid state driver's license.
4. Only DMV-registered, plated and insured low-speed vehicles (LSVs meeting FMVSS 500) may be driven on Ocean Isle Beach public streets; a valid driver's license is required and the town issues no temporary permits. Carts are banned from the beach strand and dunes.
5. Every passenger must be in a designated seat with a functioning seat belt where required. No riding on laps, bumpers, or cargo beds.
6. No riding under the influence. The same DUI rules that apply to cars apply to golf carts.
7. Yield to pedestrians and bicycles. Use headlights and taillights whenever visibility is reduced.
