Ocracoke — what you can and can't do on a cart
The rules
- Public-road use is permitted on streets posted at or below 25 mph.
- LSV registration is not required for standard on-village cart use.
- Driver must be at least 16 years old and hold a valid state driver's license.
- Ocracoke Village is cart-friendly island-wide with a 25 mph limit. Carts are treated as a primary vehicle in the village.
- Every passenger must be in a designated seat with a functioning seat belt where required. No riding on laps, bumpers, or cargo beds.
- No riding under the influence. The same DUI rules that apply to cars apply to golf carts.
- Yield to pedestrians and bicycles. Use headlights and taillights whenever visibility is reduced.
