Street-legal rules

Sanibel — what you can and can't do on a cart

Golf carts permitted on streets ≤ 35 mph.

The rules

  1. Public-road use is permitted on streets posted at or below 35 mph.
  2. Only Low-Speed Vehicles (LSVs) with a plate, seat belts and DOT lighting may operate on public streets.
  3. Driver must be at least 16 years old and hold a valid state driver's license.
  4. Under Florida law, registered, insured Low-Speed Vehicles with a licensed driver may use roads posted 35 mph or less; standard golf carts are allowed only on roads a local government designates. Sanibel's shared-use paths are reported to be closed to carts (vendor-sourced).
  5. Every passenger must be in a designated seat with a functioning seat belt where required. No riding on laps, bumpers, or cargo beds.
  6. No riding under the influence. The same DUI rules that apply to cars apply to golf carts.
  7. Yield to pedestrians and bicycles. Use headlights and taillights whenever visibility is reduced.

Local tips

  • Carts are not allowed on the shared-use paths — those are for bikes; carts use the roads.
  • Periwinkle Way backs up mid-day; go early or late.

Summaries of publicly posted municipal ordinances. Guidance only — you are responsible for following current local law. Verify with the town office before riding on public roads.
