Street-legal rules

Scottsdale — what you can and can't do on a cart

Golf carts permitted on streets ≤ 35 mph.

The rules

  1. Public-road use is permitted on streets posted at or below 35 mph.
  2. Only Low-Speed Vehicles (LSVs) with a plate, seat belts and DOT lighting may operate on public streets.
  3. Driver must be at least 16 years old and hold a valid state driver's license.
  4. Scottsdale follows Arizona law: registered, insured neighborhood electric vehicles (LSVs) with a licensed driver may use roads posted 35 mph or less, and may cross faster roads only at intersections.
  5. Every passenger must be in a designated seat with a functioning seat belt where required. No riding on laps, bumpers, or cargo beds.
  6. No riding under the influence. The same DUI rules that apply to cars apply to golf carts.
  7. Yield to pedestrians and bicycles. Use headlights and taillights whenever visibility is reduced.

Local tips

  • Scottsdale Road and Camelback are too fast for carts — use the side streets.
  • Summer riding is early-morning or after sunset; hydrate and check for shade tops.
