Street-legal rules

Siesta Key — what you can and can't do on a cart

Golf carts permitted on streets ≤ 35 mph.

The rules

  1. Public-road use is permitted on streets posted at or below 35 mph.
  2. Only Low-Speed Vehicles (LSVs) with a plate, seat belts and DOT lighting may operate on public streets.
  3. Driver must be at least 16 years old and hold a valid state driver's license.
  4. Under Florida law, registered LSVs may be driven on streets posted 35 mph or less by licensed drivers; counties may prohibit them on specific roads. Plain golf carts may only use roads the local government has designated.
  5. Every passenger must be in a designated seat with a functioning seat belt where required. No riding on laps, bumpers, or cargo beds.
  6. No riding under the influence. The same DUI rules that apply to cars apply to golf carts.
  7. Yield to pedestrians and bicycles. Use headlights and taillights whenever visibility is reduced.

Local tips

  • Midnight Pass Road is the spine — ride right and use lights after dusk.
  • Weekend traffic on the north bridge is slow; time your runs around it.
