Southport — what you can and can't do on a cart
The rules
- Public-road use is permitted on streets posted at or below 35 mph.
- Standard golf carts may be used where registered with the town, rather than LSV plating.
- Carts are limited to 20 mph.
- Driver must be at least 18 years old and hold a valid state driver's license.
- City-registered carts (sticker, liability insurance, required lights, belts and mirror) may use streets posted 35 mph or less, with a 20 mph cart speed cap. Not allowed on sidewalks or in city parks. Driver must be 18+ with a valid license.
- Every passenger must be in a designated seat with a functioning seat belt where required. No riding on laps, bumpers, or cargo beds.
- No riding under the influence. The same DUI rules that apply to cars apply to golf carts.
- Yield to pedestrians and bicycles. Use headlights and taillights whenever visibility is reduced.
