Surfside Beach — what you can and can't do on a cart
The rules
- We do not yet have a verified municipal ruleset on file for Surfside Beach. Confirm allowed roads, speed limits, and LSV requirements with the host and the local town office before riding on public roads.
- Every passenger must be in a designated seat with a functioning seat belt where required. No riding on laps, bumpers, or cargo beds.
- No riding under the influence. The same DUI rules that apply to cars apply to golf carts.
- Yield to pedestrians and bicycles. Use headlights and taillights whenever visibility is reduced.

- South Carolina permits street-legal carts on roads posted 35 mph or under, in daylight, within four miles of your address — that covers nearly all of Surfside, but not Highway 17 Bypass.
- Crossing or driving Highway 17 Business is only legal at a direct intersection crossing; plan routes on the numbered avenues instead.
- A licensed driver 16 or older must be at the wheel, and the cart needs a valid SC golf cart permit — your host handles the paperwork, but keep it in the cart.
- Book a 6-seater at least a month out for June–August; Surfside's supply is smaller than North Myrtle's and sells out first.
- Charge overnight at your rental. Most electric carts here run 25–40 miles per charge — plenty for a week of pier runs.
