The rules

1. Public-road use is permitted on streets posted at or below 35 mph.
2. Only Low-Speed Vehicles (LSVs) with a plate, seat belts and DOT lighting may operate on public streets.
3. Driver must be at least 16 years old and hold a valid state driver's license.
4. Only registered, insured low-speed vehicles (LSVs) may use town streets posted 35 mph or less, except North and South Anderson, which may only be crossed (the 25 mph business district on S Anderson is allowed). LSVs must have seat belts, lights, mirrors, wipers and a VIN.
5. Every passenger must be in a designated seat with a functioning seat belt where required. No riding on laps, bumpers, or cargo beds.
6. No riding under the influence. The same DUI rules that apply to cars apply to golf carts.
7. Yield to pedestrians and bicycles. Use headlights and taillights whenever visibility is reduced.

Local tips

• North and South Anderson Blvd can only be crossed by LSVs, not driven on.
• Book early — Topsail cart supply is small compared to the Brunswick islands.
• Bring a rain cover; south-facing squalls come in fast.
