Street-legal rules

Tybee Island — what you can and can't do on a cart

Golf carts permitted on streets ≤ 25 mph.

The rules

  1. Public-road use is permitted on streets posted at or below 25 mph.
  2. Standard golf carts may be used where registered with the town, rather than LSV plating.
  3. Driver must be at least 16 years old and hold a valid state driver's license.
  4. Tybee Island allows registered 'motorized carts' (T-number, annual inspection, insurance, valid driver's license) on city streets other than US-80/Butler Avenue, which may only be crossed at designated intersections. A cart's top speed capability may not exceed 20 mph; carts must have an amber flashing light and seat belts, and registration is $15 (renewals free).
  5. Every passenger must be in a designated seat with a functioning seat belt where required. No riding on laps, bumpers, or cargo beds.
  6. No riding under the influence. The same DUI rules that apply to cars apply to golf carts.
  7. Yield to pedestrians and bicycles. Use headlights and taillights whenever visibility is reduced.
