The rules

1. Public-road use is permitted on streets posted at or below 35 mph.
2. Standard golf carts may be used where registered with the town, rather than LSV plating.
3. Driver must be at least 16 years old and hold a valid state driver's license.
4. Galveston requires golf carts to have a city-issued plate ($25 annual, $150 commercial) and an equipment inspection; operators must be licensed and rental carts must be registered commercially. Carts are limited to streets of 35 mph or less and barred from certain roads such as Broadway and Harborside Drive.
5. Every passenger must be in a designated seat with a functioning seat belt where required. No riding on laps, bumpers, or cargo beds.
6. No riding under the influence. The same DUI rules that apply to cars apply to golf carts.
