Renting a golf cart for the first time: a pre-trip checklist

October 1, 2026 · 4 min read

A golf cart rental is one of the easiest ways to see a coastal town, but a few minutes of prep makes the difference between a smooth trip and a surprise. Here is what to sort out before and during your rental.

Before you book

  • Check the host's requirements. Many ask for a valid driver's license, a minimum age and sometimes proof of insurance.
  • Match the cart to your group. Look at seat count and passenger limits, and whether you need a four- or six-seater.
  • Read the rules for the area. Where street-legal carts may drive differs by town, so check the local rules and any restrictions on roads, speed and hours.
  • Confirm pickup or delivery, the return time and what the deposit covers.

At pickup

  • Walk around the cart with the host and note existing scratches or damage. Photos with a timestamp help everyone.
  • Check the charge or fuel level, brakes, lights and seat belts if equipped.
  • Ask how to operate the cart, charge it and lock it, and who to call if something goes wrong.

On the road

  • Follow traffic laws and the host's rules, and keep everyone seated with hands and feet inside.
  • Park legally and avoid dunes, soft sand and protected areas.
  • Never drive after drinking.

Returning it

Bring it back on time and plugged in or fueled as the host asks. Take a few photos on return so your deposit comes back without a fuss.
